Forbes is reporting problems with Windows 10 Nvidia Dual Monitor installations apparently not hardware specific. I am not a gamer myself but also use dual monitors on a Nvidia graphics card. For several months the problem kept getting worse to the point that it would go into an endless reboot cycle when I would start my computer. The only help I was able to find on the web was concerning disabling auto restart after updating which did not address the issue of my computer developing a mind of its own to restart when it decided it wanted to.
I did upgrade Windows 10 from Home to Pro thinking this would help me to resolve the issue which it did not which led me to believe I had a hardware problem and not software. While readjusting my computers, which were connected to dual DVI ports on my graphics card, I lost the signal to one of my monitors, and the computer would no longer recognize it.
It wasn't until after I disconnected both monitors from the computer then reconnecting them was I able to get the signal back. I figured that both DVI signal ports on the graphics card were probably wired in parallel which meant the signal was split and sent to both ports which was probably the cause of the reboot loop at start up. That same day I read an article on the web which stated that a simple over looked issue was the possibility of a bad CMOS battery. I replaced the CMOS battery first and did not have any problems when starting my computer.
When starting the computer, both screen show the booting sequence on both screens, then one goes blank.
Luckily, my primary with my software is visible. I go to setting and click on System Display, notifications, power. I then go to Display, move down to Multiple displays, and select Duplicate these displays. This causes both screen to display.
When it asks to save changes, I revet to previous setting which is "Extend these displays".By now, a dual-monitor setup has become commonplace. Multitasking on a single screen is just way too confining. But why stop at two displays? Right now, my main PC has a triple-monitor setup: my main inch central monitor, with a inch monitor on either side. I use my extra monitors for a number of things, such as comparing spreadsheets side-by-side, writing articles while also doing research, keeping tabs on my social media feeds, and, of course, watching Netflix.
Using one of your monitors in vertical orientation can make a big difference for scrolling long documents. You can even use your TV as an extra computer monitor! But before you jump in, you want to give your multi-monitor plan some forethought.
This guide will walk you through all the factors you need to take into account before setting up three or more monitors. Before you run out and buy a bunch of extra monitors, check to see whether your computer is physically capable of handling all that graphics prowess.
For example, many older Nvidia cards are unable to run more than two monitors on a single card, even if they have more than two ports.

If your graphics card supports—and has enough ports for—the number of monitors you want to set up, excellent.
Check out the best budget graphics card section of our GPU guide for your best options. In general, monitors can be had for fairly cheap these days. You can also find smaller IPS monitors at around In my case, I already had two inch monitors, and I wanted a larger monitor as the centerpiece of my setup, so I picked up a inch monitor and placed it between my two inch displays.
If you have a VGA port on your PC or your monitor, I suggest staying away from it: VGA is an analog connector, which means your picture will be noticeably less sharp and colors will be less vivid. Set up your monitors, plug them in, and turn on your PC. A perfectly-formed multi-monitor setup! Well, not so fast. Setup is easy, but there are still a couple more steps.
This will take you to a screen where you can configure the options you have for multiple monitors in Windows. Here, you can confirm that all your monitors are detected. Click Identifywhich will cause a large number to appear on each of your displays, so you can determine which screen is which. Nvidia users will need to set up Nvidia Surround, while AMD users will need to create an Eyefinity group for their monitors.

Stephen Simmons. Once connected I booted into desktop to find Windows 7 had identified that I have 3 monitors connected so far so goodbut had only opted to enable one. Put a tick in the Span displays with Surround box and hit apply. If for any reason you need to modify the configuration of your connected monitors this screen will show us how exactly we need to connect the displays to the graphics card. Once everything is connected as it should be click Apply to finalise the configuration.
Your screens may flick on and off for a moment as it configures the initial resolution. To fix this issue simply drag and move each numbered screen within the window to its actual position on your desk as pictured above and click Apply. Your screens will probably flick on and off again as it re-configures the resolution and monitor position. We should then see the Configure Displays for Surround window, this will create a picture of a road going diagonally across the left and middle monitors, due to bezel thickness this will appear offset on your monitor but in our print screen it shows it straight.
You then need to adjust the width options until the road appears straight on your monitors although it appears offset on our print screen. Ensuring that the monitors are the same model makes it very easy to measure and plan for them, as well as setting them up and maintaining them.
Without the right height adjustments, you may also struggle to get different monitors precisely parallel with each other.
You also want all your monitors to have support for the same features, such as graphic syncing. Your game may look seriously weird if your monitors have different display features and support options. Finally, you will want to make sure that your graphics card has enough connections for three monitors. A custom graphics cards is basically a necessity for this process.
That makes things much easier than it was in the old days. However, if you are buying a graphics card specifically for this project, you can make extra sure that it has the right kind and number of ports. You should also confirm particular multi-screen features, which are:. Note that Eyefinity is friendly with DisplayPort connections, so those are the ports to look in your monitors.
Like Eyefinity, Surround supports multiple monitors as well as 3D gaming. Surround works with all standard monitor connections. This step is easy. Plug everything in first, double-check your ports to make sure they are the right ones, and then turn it on.
For a gaming setup, we suggest skipping any operating system settings and going straight to your GPU control panel, where the real action takes place.
Both AMD and Nvidia have control panels where you can setup multiple monitors and adjust as necessary.
There is a fairly well updated list of the games that are compatible with multi-monitor features. In fact, games have probably been more advanced this way than graphics cards in the past. So chances are very, very good that whatever game you dream of playing surrounded by screens, will work just fine.

Your eyes can finally breathe. The first factor you need to determine is what type of graphics component you have inside your desktop or laptop. In a desktop, video output generated by integrated graphics is piped through ports mounted on the motherboard that protrude through their designated holes at the back of the case. Typically, motherboards include three types of video output to cover the vast assortment of monitors and technologies spanning the last 10 years.
How to create an insane multiple monitor setup with three, four, or more displays
These include:. Video Graphics Array VGA : This is typically blue, features 15 holes, and has a screw on each side to secure the attached cable. This port handles analog video only and is the oldest video output of the trio. To figure out what version you have installed, the diagrams are located here.
The standard Type-A port is mostly rectangular save for a slight dip on the lower half. Meanwhile, discrete graphics cards installed in desktops have their ports that can rely on any of the standards noted above. DisplayPort : This digital video output was created by Dell for extremely high resolutions. Because of their form factor, you will have a limited number of video outputs.
The Alienware is a gaming laptop, however. A different laptop, like a budget notebook, might include just one HDMI port. With laptops, your ability to add displays is limited. And because PCs can typically support more than one add-in graphics card, you could turn your desktop with four monitors into a vast visual wall with eight screens.
Their orientation can be horizontal or vertical, depending on the model. Limitations are only a concern if you want to connect more than that. Now that you understand the basics of how displays work, you can connect your displays in Windows Doing so is easy, and you can quickly access the Display interface by right-clicking on the desktop and selecting Display Settings on the menu shown above. All connected displays should appear on the screen, with your primary display listed as 1.Using more than two monitors used to be a luxury for those with the biggest PC building budgets.
These days, large, high-resolution displays are affordable, and graphics cards are more powerful than ever. If the thought of gaming or working on three displays at once entices you, here's how to make it happen.
Imagine it: firing up your favorite game and having it spread across three glorious displays, a full field-of-vision where you can see more bad guys coming, and a larger view of the game field, whether you're playing a FPS, racing game, top-down strategy, or MMO. Even better, if you've purchased or built a computer at all in the past few years, odds are you have a video card that already supports it. Of course, gaming with three displays also requires significant graphics power, so even if your card supports three panels, gaming with it is another story.
Before you go plugging things in, you have some homework to do first. Making the most of multiple monitors isn't difficultbut a little planning goes a long way. Let's walk you through what you need to know and how to set everything up, step by step. Before you do anything—and especially before you start spending money, find out if your favorite games support three-panel gaming.
Some games do right out of the box, while others will use your primary display and ignore the others. Titles like Battlefield 4Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-SequelGRID AutosportElite: Dangerousall support three monitors with little additional configuration, you just have to group them first more on how to do that later.
The Wide Screen Gaming Forum keeps a database of Eyefinity and Surround-capable games here you can search for your favorite titles before you go and buy a second or third display. Even if your favorite game isn't in that list though doesn't mean it won't work, though.
The list only contains games verified to work with multiple panels, so newly released games may not be included yet, and games that require tweaks like third-party mods or FOV field of view hacks won't show up either. Do your homework—odds are someone's managed to make your favorite game work.
Even if they haven't, there are plenty of other games to choose from. Next, before you run out and buy another display, see if your current graphics card can support three displays. Part of this is simple—just look at the back of your computer and see how many outputs your card has. If you've purchased a mid-to-upper tier card at all in the past four or five years, odds are you have at least one DVI output, DisplayPort output, and HDMI output possibly several of each.
If you have at least three outputs or one DisplayPort 1.
